Fred was born in Lush's Bight, Notre Dame Bay, on December 4, 1919 to Philip and Bessie Locke.  He enlisted in the Royal Navy on March 22, 1941 and served overseas until January 22,  1946.  His port division was Lowestoft, England.

Fred served as a Gunner on several minesweeper ships in the English Channel  -  one he mentioned specifically was Finesse.   During his service, he was awarded a medal "Mention for Dispatched" for gunning down a German bomber plane.

Upon his return, he met and married Lillian Butler. They have four children (Elizabeth, David, Carol-Ann and Philip), seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, Brianne Joerges Wheeler, who attends Mary Queen of Peace School.

Mr. Locke presently resides at North Haven Manor.
