Bell Island is a large island in Conception
Bay. For nearly 100 years it was a thriving mining community, but in
the mid-sixties, the mine was closed because cheaper sources of iron ore
were discovered. Today, it's main industry is tourism. Over
100 000 visitors a year visit the island to view the spectacular scenery and to
learn about its rich mining history. The photos in this gallery
were taken in 1993.
