Woodland Caribou
Rangifer tarandus-caribou

Digital

The southern Avalon Peninsula once boasted of the largest Woodland Caribou herd on the island.  However, tthe herd has been reduced in recent years because of parasites such as brainworm. In 2003, I was fortunate to have seen quite a few caribou, in fact they were blocking the road.  It was quite a thrill to see so many caribou so close.  As you will see from the photos, there were quite a few people there to witness the event.
